Color blocking is all the rage right now and can be seen on everything from handbags to shoes to dresses even make-up. As simple as it seems, color blocking is the art of wearing blocks of color, be it on the same garment or combining complementing or contrasting colors in two. You can go as bold as you want by rocking vibrant/neon colors or more subdued with pastels. What’s so great about this trend is that anyone can wear color blocking regardless of age or size and look fabulous!
Here’s a little history behind the trend: The origin of color blocking dates back to the 60s, when it was popularized by the ‘Mod Fashion’. This fashion culture ushered an innovative, bold and creative style of clothing that originally belonged to London. The British youth set the trend, which was later followed by the rest of the world.
One could say color blocking in fashion is most famously represented from the Mondrian Dress by Yves St. Laurent in 1965. He took the simple shift dress of the era and, inspired by the paintings of the 1930’s Dutch Piet Mondrian, added blocks of color to it to give it new life. Then, he followed the technique of mixing primary colors with solid black lines to create a geometric, yet simplistic eye-popping effect. And, the rest is history!
It’s amazing that this trend has been around since the 60’s but still manages to look fresh and modern years later. This trend tops our hot list for the spring & summer and is definitely here to stay for awhile. We’ve compiled a couple of our favorite must-have color block items. Which is your favorite?
